Earth’s New Mini-Moon: A Cosmic Visitor in 2024

Introduction:
The astronomical world of the space is gearing up for a new addition to the family where Earth will receive a new “mini-moon” in 2024 from Sept. 29 to Nov. 25. This small object that is temporarily revolving around our planet has attracted scientific minds and space lovers. But, of course, you are wondering what a mini-moon is, and how this term is fundamentally different from the usual Moon. It is time to go deep into this space event and clarify its meaning.

What Is a Mini-Moon?
A mini-moon is an asteroid which is temporarily orbiting the Earth and is temporarily in Earth’s orbit.  These objects only remain in the orbit of Jupiter for one or two days before being ejected back into space. Though small, their effect does not come close to that of larger structures but it helps astronomers to learn the behavior of NEAs and the surrounding environment of Earth.

The 2024 Mini-Moon

As per the astronomers, this new mini moon will join the Earth’s orbit by as early as 2024. Even if the new celestial object is barely visible, it is attracting a lot of attention as scientists would like to trace its orbit. It appears with its arrival a window of time is available to observe how these temporary satellites behave concerning the gravity of earth.

Size and Composition: The mini-moon has been calculated to be a couple of meters in size, as are other objects that appear to have come to brief orbits of Earth.

Duration in Orbit: It’s planned to hover in the orbit for several months before being forced out of the orbit by gravitational pull.

Previous Mini-Moons

This has happened in the past and Earth has had other mini-moons back in 2006 and then again in 2020. Although such objects are small in number, they replenish scientists’ stock of knowledge. Studying their orbits, researchers can gain more understanding on asteroids and their behavior in the near-Earth space environment. Mini-moons are also significant because they may shed light on how one might protect against possible asteroid dangers in the future.
