Dubai South, the urban master developer, has set its sights on making the Al Maktoum International Airport the largest airport globally upon its completion. Recent reports from April suggest that Dubai is contemplating a revival of its most significant construction endeavor, the expansion of the Al Maktoum International Airport.
Initially launched in 2010 for cargo operations and later expanded to accommodate passengers in 2013, this ambitious project holds a staggering value of AED 120 billion ($33 billion). With aspirations to secure its place as the world’s premier airport by 2050, the facility envisions handling a staggering 255 million passengers annually. The first phase, projected to wrap up by 2030, aims to elevate the airport’s capacity to a remarkable 130 million passengers each year. Encompassing a sprawling expanse of 56 square kilometers, the comprehensive undertaking promises to redefine air travel in the region.
Conversations are presently in progress to rekindle this transformative project, promising substantial economic uplift for Dubai. A surge in traveler numbers, highlighted by Dubai International’s management of 66.1 million passengers in 2022, has illuminated the path for expansive growth. The current year anticipates approximately 78 million passengers to pass through the airport, with a return to pre-pandemic activity levels anticipated by 2024.
The journey of the Al Maktoum International Airport project experienced a pause during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, meticulous preparations are already underway to reignite its momentum. Of particular note is the $2.7 billion substructure contract dedicated to Concourse 1 and the West Terminal building. This pivotal phase encompasses an array of vital components, including tunnels, cutting-edge baggage handling systems, intricately designed road networks, and essential support facilities.
