Tips and Tricks For Beginners:⠀

Do’s and Don’ts⠀

The Magic of Djing involves creating moments on the spot between your music and the audience. So never stick to rigidly fixed sets. Your best bet is to pack a crate or two and get better at reading the crowd. Crowd reading is an essential skill that will pay dividends later on.⠀

Know your role in the lineup and never drop peak time in bangers at the open up. If you’re at the warm up, don’t play the peak time. This is the most common mistake among Djs, especially in newer ones. The role of an opening art is to set up the crowd and hand it over to the headliner. Always remember that this night is the combined effect of all the artists in line up.⠀

Never Dj like you are in the bedroom alone and staring at your laptop and controller. Always look up at your audience from time to time. Noticing and connecting is an important part of the performance of Djing.⠀

Never act as a juke box , open format is cool but if the crowd is asking for hip hop number after techno banger, you are not doing anyone a favour. Take requests and play them when you think the time should be played. Don’t act like a Spotify playlist.⠀

Never refuse to play your early time slots because nobody’s there yet. This will happen to you many times in your Djing career, so suck it up and don’t be a Prima Donna. Kindly use this time to test out a few new tunes when nobody’s to hear and see if they are good or you think they were.⠀

Finally, like any skill, you get better with Djing the more you do it. Experience is something that is only brought with time and you are bound to make mistakes (which is fine) but you can get the head start by avoiding this commoner.⠀
